The JSW Group’s foray into steel manufacturing began in 1982, when it set up the Jindal Iron and Steel Company with its first steel plant at Vasind near Mumbai. Post economic liberalization, in 1992 when the Government of India adopted economic reforms, Jindal group was amongst the first to grab the opportunity. It was in 1994, the Government of Karnataka approached the OP Jindal Group to set up an integrated steel plant at Tornagallu in the Bellary– Hospet area of Karnataka, the heart of the high grade iron ore belt. It is just 340 kms from Bangalore, and well connected to Goa and Chennai Ports. JSW succeeded in commencing Vijayanagar steel plant in a record 33 months. Selecting the COREX technology, 1st in India along with the traditional blast furnace route provided innovative solutions to power and water scarcity. The Company achieved an important milestone by commissioning the Hot Strip Mill manufacturing Hot rolled Coil by backward integration in 1997. The next two decades saw significant expansion and several acquisitions, following the merger of Jindal Iron and Steel Co (JISCO) and Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd (JVSL) in 2005. Today JSW Steel has plants in six locations in India — Vijayanagar in Karnataka, Salem in Tamil Nadu, and Tarapur, Vasind, Kalmeshwar and Dolvi in Maharashtra. The global operations include a plate and pipe mill in the US. In order to securitise resources, the company has acquired mining assets in Chile, USA and Mozambique. Currently, JSW Steel is one of India’s leading integrated steel manufacturers with a capacity of 18 MTPA. It is one of the fastest growing companies in India with a footprint in over 140 countries. “JSW Steel offers the widest product portfolio in India and leverages it’s capability to customize offerings to match customer needs. To stay on the leading edge of technical advancement, JSW has entered into technological collaboration with JFE Steel Corp.,Japan, for manufacturing high strength and advanced high strength steel for automobile sector. JSW Steel also entered into a joint venture with Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc., Tokyo, to set up a state-of-the-art steel processing centers. To strengthen its global network, the Company has acquired a Pipe and Plate making steel mill in Baytown, Texas in USA.

Mr. Jindal holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Bangalore University. He is also the principal promoter of the Company. Mr. Jindal’s dedication to the cause of a self-reliant India is reflected in the technological innovations that define and set apart each JSW company. Under his leadership, JSW Group over the years has expanded in other core sectors of the economy, such as Steel, Power, infrastructure building and Cement. Today, the JSW Group runs some of the most energy efficient and eco-friendly manufacturing facilities in the country. Mr. Jindal also serves as council member of the Indian Institute of Metals and is also a member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Sustainability Committee of World Steel Association, as well as the former President of Institute of Steel Development and Growth.. In 2007, he was named the Ernst and Young ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ in the manufacturing category. In 2009, he was honoured with the Willy Korf Ken Iverson Steel Vision Award by the American Metal Market & World Steel Dynamics.
